As part of the activities aimed at supporting the Interreligious Council in Macedonia, a meeting was held on May 6, 2009 with the representatives of the religious communities. They discussed the progress made in the process of institutionalization of the Council and emphasized the need of capacity building for the members of the religious communities through a series of trainings.

In the part on capacity building for the representatives of the religious communities, several trainings were organized on public relations, access to EU funds and preparation of applications and human resources development for 37 representatives. Also a study visit to Netherlands was organized in October 2009 for the students from the Orthodox Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Islamic Studies. The program has also supported the maintenance of the web-site of the Commission for Relations with Religious Communities. By the end of the project, an international directory of orthodox diaconia was published. Also, additional consultations with the representatives of the religious communities regarding their institutionalization were held.

As part of the program “Analysis of the situation of non-majority communities” in cooperation with the Association for Democratic Initiatives (ADI), the municipalities of Gostivar, Kičevo, Struga and Debar were selected in order to monitor the sessions of the municipal councils and the process of using the Badinter’s principle in the decision making on cultural, linguistic and identity issues. In addition, the work of the Commission for Relations with Communities was monitored. For this purpose, three monitors were trained, who observed 16 sessions and conducted 30 interviews with municipal representatives. In addition, training on minority rights was delivered for the councilors of selected municipalities and members of the Commission for Relations with Communities. A minority report for Macedonia was prepared at the end of the project.
